Adam Wingard's 'Onslaught' is a mixed bag, a return to his roots that doesn't quite hit the mark. The film's premise, blending elements of 'You're Next' and 'The Guest' with a touch of 'Sarah Connor' and 'Jason Voorhees', is intriguing. But the execution falls flat, especially in the final act. The movie promises an epic showdown, but it fails to deliver, leaving viewers with a sense of anticlimax. The first two-thirds of the film are strong, with a great world-building effort and a compelling cast, including Adria Arjona as the vulnerable yet badass Celeste. However, the climax falls short, and the action sequences are tame, despite the presence of three unstoppable bad-guy killers. The film's humor, provided by Drew Starkey's high-on-MDMA character, is a welcome addition, but it can't save the overall letdown. The visual style and soundtrack are decent, but they can't compensate for the missed opportunities in the plot and action. In my opinion, 'Onslaught' is a missed chance for Wingard to truly shine, and it leaves a sense of frustration, especially after the promise of an epic finish. It's still a watchable film, but it doesn't live up to its potential, and I can't help but feel that it could have been something truly special.
