Recipe Ingredients

  • Butter: I like sauteing my veggies using butter better than using oil. They taste much, much better.
  • Onion and garlic: as you may already know, I add them to most of my dishes.
  • Mushrooms: use your favorite mushrooms.
  • Green beans: buy fresh ones. The frozen green beans do not bake properly for this dish.
  • Chicken broth: you can certainly cook your green beans in water if you don’t want to waste chicken broth or save it and use it to make soup.
  • Cream of mushroom soup: this is condensed flavor in a can. It is the base of the casserole and provides a great creamy texture.
  • French fried onion rings add a powerful burst of flavor as well as some crunch. They’re a classic addition to green bean casserole.
  • Homemade poultry seasoning is a mix of dried herbs that provide an extra layer of flavor, making this dish much more interesting to the palate.
  • Cheddar cheese: I always recommend shredding your cheese. Pre-shredded cheese has added ingredients that prevent it from sticking, and it doesn’t melt quite right.

What Goes With Green Bean Casserole?

A classic meal at my house is green bean casserole served as a side dish to meatloaf.

I try to vary the meatloaf recipe to keep things interesting, so check out Lipton Onion Soup Meatloaf, my favorite Cracker Barrel Meatloaf Recipe (it has a delicious tangy crust), Brown Gravy Meatloaf, which is a ketchup-free recipe, or I love this individual meatloaf recipe Best Taco Meatloafthat is covered with salsa and melted cheddar cheese!

Prepare Green Bean Casserole Ahead Of Time

Leave the baking to the same day you want to serve the casserole.

You can mix all the ingredients before time, except for the French-fried onion rings. They will become soggy and lose all their crunch.

Store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. On the day you plan to serve it, mix in the onion rings, bake for 20 minutes, add the cheddar cheese, and let it melt for 10 more.

Can You Freeze Green Bean Casserole?

Yes, you can. If you have any leftovers, place them in an airtight container and freeze them for up to 4 months. Remember to label it with the date before storing it.

Recipe Tips

  1. When slicing the green beans, make sure to slice them into bite-size pieces.
  2. Do not let the casserole sit for too long before baking it, or the French-fried onion rings will become soggy.
  3. For added crunch, you can add more French fried rings on top.
  4. Keep an eye on the casserole for the last 10 minutes of baking. The cheese melts fast and can burn.
  5. Serve immediately while hot. The cheese hardens fast when it cools down.

Calories: 295kcal

Ingredients

  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 3 cups sliced fresh green beans
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • 1 - 10 oz can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup french fried onion rings
  • ½ teaspoon of “Homemade Poultry Seasoning”
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Using a medium-sized pot, bring the chicken broth to a boil and cook the green beans until fully cooked but not super soft. You still want them to have a bit of a bite. Preheat the oven to 350F

  • While the green beans are cooking, melt the butter in a large skillet and saute the onions and garlic until they become transparent. This releases their flavor.

  • Add the sliced mushrooms to the skillet and the “Homemade Poultry Seasoning” and cook them for about 3-4 minutes or until tender.

  • Drain the green beans and discard the broth or save it for soup. Add the cooked green beans to the skillet with the onions and mushrooms.

  • Mix in the cream of mushroom soup and the french fried onion rings. Add salt and pepper to taste.

  • Transfer the mixture to a baking dish (no need to add any butter or cooking spray), and bake for 20 minutes, uncovered.

  • Take out the casserole and sprinkle the freshly shredded cheddar cheese on top. Continue baking for another 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted. Serve immediately.
