Growing up in the Pacific Northwest was amazing and full of adventure. I remember riding my bike down big hills, finding frogs in the creek, going blackberry picking at my grandparents, road trips with the family, baking strawberry pies, hiking the mountains one day while dipping my toes in the ocean the next and enjoying an old fashioned root beer float on a hot day made with vanilla ice cream and A&W Root Beer.

Tips & Tricks

Let the ice cream sit out for 5 minutes or until it gets soft and slightly melted before placing into popsicle molds. This will make it easier to fill each mold and also allows that A&W Root Beer to mix in a bit to create a creamy popsicle.

Description

Root Beer Float Popsicles are made with A&W® Root Beer and vanilla ice cream packed into popsicle molds and frozen fora delicious treat made with only two ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 15 ounces A&W® Root Beer
  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Let the vanilla ice cream sit out for 5 minutes or until it becomes slightly melted.
  2. Fill each mold a third to half full of ice cream.
  3. Fill each mold withA&W Root Beer. Since the root beer will foam, let it sit for a minute until that foam goes down and fill some more until you have liquid to the top of each mold.
  4. Put the popsicle mold lid on and insert popsicle sticks.
  5. Let freeze overnight and serve. You can run the mold under lukewarm water for a minute to release the popsicles from the mold easier.

Notes

Ingredient amounts may me different dependent on your popsicle molds.

I loved going to A&W as a kid. It was a special treat on Saturday night. Was wondering if anyone has tried it with the zero sugar A&W root beer or the A&W cream sodas. Looking forward to trying both as soon as we get some molds from Amazon.

Can you use vanilla frozen yogurt instead of vanilla ice cream for those of us with lactose issues.

    Reply

    • Root Beer Float Popsicles - Simply Made Recipes (19)Amber

Worth a try and I dont see why not. The yogurt might actually mix in with the soda better than ice cream but I am also lactose sensitive and it isn’t enough dairy in one popsicle to upset my stomach but everyone is different?

Was an A&W carhop in the days when we still used frozen/ frosted glass mugs. My favorite was to watch the little kids enjoy their “ baby” mug of root beer

When my mother and the 6 daughters would visit our grandmother in Sweetwater, a treat for her and us was to go to the A&W drive-in for a root beer float. Those memories are precious to me and, now, I have a way to recreate the tradition with popsicles with my own grands. Thank you!

When I was a kid my family did grass mowing jobs
After we finished for the day we would go to the root beer stand and get a A&W root beer float and a galon jug to take home, I told my dad it too hot to get a jug of root beer to take home it might get too hot before we get home and it might explode and make a mess in the car, well we got from Indiana to Galien abot 3 blocks from pur house is a rail road track’s when we drove over the railroad tracks the jug of root beer exploded and the car and all of us was covered in A&W rootbeer but there was just enough root beer for each of us to get a small 4 ounce glass with some ice cubes in it, it took me 2 houres to clean the car

Have you tried using non dairy ice cream? I have issues with dairy and am always looking for a good substitute. I really like So Delicious products because they don’t have carageenan in them. That crap is worse than msg!

I have heard of some non-dairy ice cream products on the market but have not tried any of them. Give it a try though and see how it turns out. I’m sure it would work out fine.

In Pennsylvania A&W root beer was a drive in restaurant that served hamburges, hot dogs, cheesesteak, French fries, etc. The main drink with your lunch was a large A&W root beer or an A&W float! My Mom would drive the 25 miles to partake this treat. What a memory! This was in the 1960’s.?

That is so neat. I lived in Oak Harbor, Washington for awhile and there was an A&W about 20 minutes away that we would go to for root beer and a burger. I wish the restaurants would make a come back for sure!

The A&W’s are still around in Canada, there are 2 within 15 minutes from me. 1, next to a Dairy Queen in Quispamsis, and 1 next to McDonalds in Saint John, NB
